Wayne (Tex) Evans writes about our compatriot, Larry Joe Johansen (http://www.hartshorn.us/Navy/navy-Johansen.htm). He and Wayne worked alongside one another at Azuma, 1951-53. Larry had a heart attack on August 13th. His wife, Phyllis, called 911 and he was hospitalized. He will be having a pace maker installed on the 12th of September in La Jolla, CA. Larry is "Navy Strong" and still hopes to attend the reunion. Please pray for him and hope that he makes it to Whidbey

Word from John Loonam sadly informs us of John (Jack) Matous who has terminal liver cancer. Jack graduated MN A school in Yorktown in 1954 and was assigned to Naval  Mine Depot Yorktown for duty. He left the service after one tour as an MN3 and married a local (Gloucester) girl where he has lived ever since. Jack retired from Naval Mine Engineering Facility in the late 80's. Jack worked in the Weapons Electrical branch at NMEF. Jack is a Pilgrim in the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 886 Gloucester  where he spent most of his off work available time.  Any cards of cheer may be directed to John who will deliver them to Jack [John Loonam] PO Box 521, Gloucester  VA 23061]

 Special Prayer Request

Our shipmate, Len Siluk, MNCS (Ret.) is hospitalized and in need of prayerful support. I spoke with his son, Rick, who informed me that Len is in very serious condition. Like many of us who loved the opportunity we had to serve in the Navy, Len was quite expressive. Rick is his Dad's primary care support and drives him around. When they would pass the Navy Recruiting office, Len would ask his son to stop the car so "he could go in and re-up."  Len lost his wife last year and we all can understand what it is like to be ill and without our life's companion for support. Here is an opportunity to send an e-mail of support and/or a card of cheer. Rick will pass on any e-mail message to his Dad at <mailto:lenjoy54@att.net>lenjoy54@att.net > Please show how much you care for the welfare of your fellow sailors and Minemen. Mail can be sent to 3209 Prichard Place, Schertz, TX 78154-3904

 Special Prayer Request

All,

This is to bring everyone up to speed about my pending surgery. I recently had a CAT scan which revealed two aneurysms; one in my right thigh (the iliac artery) and the other smaller one (the abdominal artery) near my right kidney. I have just spoken to the surgeon and we have set up the surgery for March 21. The doctor has decided, after consultation with others, to repair the aneurysm in the thigh and keep an eye on the one near the kidney at this time. He indicated that the surgery would be in the morning, remain over night and go home the next day. For those who are not aware, I had an aortic aneurysm repaired in January 1993 which remains operational with no ill effects. I ask that you will keep me in your prayers.

 Special Prayer Request

All,

Our Chaplain, Bob Hart, is in need of support in the form of thoughts and prayers from all shipmates. He has a spinal disc that is worn out which causes bone on bone discomfort and won't be able to attend the 2013 reunion.
