Please send along anything you would like to share with fellow minemen.
LATEST ADDITION TO BINNACLE LIST

Belatedly, we would like to wish Evelyn DeChene a speedy recovery from a painful mishap. Phil writes: "Evelyn has broken her hip while we were visiting our daughter here in Independence, KS.  We were also here for the week long Independence Neewollah (Halloween spelled backwards) celebrations.  Dick and Sue Schommer are familiar with what that is all about. We have been here three weeks and she is now well enough to fly home, but will have to remain off her right foot for another 3 weeks." We trust that Phil had had his fill of cooking and cleaning during Evelyn's "down time." Notes of cheer always welcomed at < pdechene@triad.rr.com >

KOREAN WAR VETS RECOGNIZED

Judge George Preston (former MN2) sent us a link to the Arizona Veterans of the Korean War. George writes: The President of South Korea sent his personal aide to make this award (Korean Peace Medal) to 300 Arizona vets in an elaborate ceremony. There were many Navy vets but only Larry Johansen and George Preston represented the mine force.  The elaborate ceremony took place in Scottsdale on Oct 25th.  Dozens of South Korean military were present along with numerous entertainers.

In accepting the medal I did so in behalf of all of us in theater at that time and especially the DMS, AMS, Mine Sweep Boats and Carrier sailors who saw action in the early parts of the conflict including those who took casualties. All of us are at least 80 today and this was a memorable event which took place October 25, 2014

I retired this year after a career as a trial lawyer for 20 years and a judge for another 30. I am now engaged as a volunteer working with the mentally ill under Court Guardianship.

MINEMAN OF THE YEAR GOES FLEET-WIDE

The official Navy page rarely publishes tributes to Minemen but our Mineman of the Year made front page news on the page of Commander Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet. A member of COMLCSRON ONE, Mineman 1st Class (SW) Steven G. Hassler was featured. This may not be news to Dashpot readers but we would like to extend our congratulations to BZs to PO Hassler.

MYSTERY MINEMAN OF THE MONTH

We know what they look like now but how many recognize the men we served with 40, 50 or even 60 years ago.

Can anyone identify this young MNSN taken at Point Loma?
